NBA Rumors: The star with whom the Brooklyn Nets want to do business

The Brooklyn Nets are emerging as one of the teams to closely watch as the trade deadline approaches. The New York franchise has a dual role: that of a clear seller and, at the same time, a team with enough salary cap space to facilitate external operations as a third party in complex trades. Additionally, they have one of the most attractive names in the market, as they are willing to entertain offers for Michael Porter Jr., a former NBA champion.

Erik Slater, from ClutchPoints, explains that Porter Jr.'s best season is jeopardizing the Nets' rebuilding strategy, making his departure a very real possibility. "Brooklyn approached this summer with a clear 'tanking' agenda. However, Porter Jr.'s elite level has put the team in an uncomfortable position in the battle for the top three draft picks," says Slater.

The season started in the worst way for the Nets, with seven consecutive losses. However, since then, the team has shown unexpected competitiveness, largely thanks to Porter Jr.'s average of 25.6 points per game. With a current record of 7-18, Brooklyn has a better record than five other teams in the league, significantly reducing their chances of securing the number one draft pick.

Future asset or sell at the right moment?

At 27 years old, Porter Jr. maintains a 40% accuracy from three-point range throughout his career and was an NBA champion with the Denver Nuggets just two and a half years ago. The big question for the Nets is whether they should consider him a cornerstone to build upon or take advantage of his excellent form to sell him at maximum value.

According to Slater, Porter Jr. is one of only five NBA players averaging at least 25 points per game, shooting 49% or more from the field, and 39% or more from the three-point line. The other members of this exclusive group are Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Anthony Edwards. "Whether the Nets decide to sell him at his peak or retain him as part of their upcoming project will be one of the great NBA stories in the weeks leading up to the trade deadline," Slater concludes.
