NBA Rumors: The trade proposal that the Raptors could make for Ja Morant

With Anthony Davis sidelined for months and Trae Young already traded to the Washington Wizards, the focus of the NBA market, just weeks away from the February 5th deadline, has shifted definitively to Ja Morant. The Memphis Grizzlies point guard, always surrounded by controversy, is now the name causing the most buzz in the front offices.

According to ESPN's Mike Wright, Morant has reportedly informed both league players and former coaches that his time in Memphis is over and he will not wear the Grizzlies' jersey again. This statement, if confirmed, further accelerates the need to find him a new destination.

Although some reports suggest that his market is not particularly wide, there is one franchise that, as often happens when a star is available, has already positioned itself at the forefront: the Toronto Raptors. Sam Quinn, from CBS Sports, has proposed a potential trade scenario that would send Morant north of the border:

The proposal comes just two days after Quickley had his standout moment of the season by hitting the buzzer-beating three-pointer against the Charlotte Hornets.

A Deal Full of Questions

Quinn himself questions the rationale of the trade for Toronto. The Raptors already struggle with outside shooting, and giving up one of their top specialists to bring in a point guard who doesn't excel as a shooter raises clear doubts. Moreover, Morant's playing style also seems to not naturally fit in other aspects of the team's offense and defense.

As Quinn points out, "Toronto's third-ranked defense could accommodate Morant somewhat comfortably, but their offense, based on passing and a very equal distribution, is a much more questionable fit." Nevertheless, the analyst recalls that the Raptors are known for making big moves: "until they take that big step, whatever it may be, they will continue to be rumored in deals like this."

From the Grizzlies' perspective, the appeal of the package lies mainly in Quickley. The point guard would bring solid perimeter defense, reliable three-point shooting, and, in Quinn's words, a "low-maintenance" profile. These qualities, precisely the opposite of what Morant has been offering, could make Memphis view this type of agreement very favorably as the league rapidly approaches a deadline that promises to shake up the landscape.
