NBA Rumors: The Lakers Want to Bring Together Giannis Antetokounmpo and Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic showed no concern for the underwhelming performance of Los Angeles Lakers in the final stages of the transfer market. The Los Angeles franchise prioritized a long-term vision with a focus on a potential roster reconfiguration during the upcoming summer, which could involve an attempt to sign Giannis Antetokounmpo.

As reported by Dave McMenamin of ESPN, Doncic supported the team's decision to avoid hasty moves before February 5, opting for a long-term view. A Western Conference executive explained that Antetokounmpo is the major target that the Lakers hope to reach for if they aim to make a big impact in the next offseason. Another executive from the Eastern Conference even suggested that the Los Angeles team could go all out for the two-time MVP.

However, there are significant obstacles for a deal with the Milwaukee Bucks to come to fruition. The Lakers will only have three first-round picks to negotiate this summer (2026, 2031, and 2033) and lack young players with high potential who could strengthen the offer.

For instance, the Detroit Pistons could easily surpass a proposal from Los Angeles due to their young talent and the availability of all their future picks. The Golden State Warriors, on the other hand, may not have that young talent but possess all their future draft picks, which is particularly appealing considering that Stephen Curry will turn 38 on March 14.

Movements and Salary Cap Space

Currently, it is also unclear what stance Antetokounmpo or the Bucks will take, as neither party appears eager to part ways, although this scenario could change at the end of the season. The only move by the Lakers at the end of the market was the acquisition of the expiring contract of Luke Kennard from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Gabe Vincent.

The club currently has 107.8 million dollars committed for the next season, a figure that will change if Austin Reaves decides to enter the market and signs an extension that could reach 241 million over five years. Even with this new contract, the franchise would have around 50 million in salary cap space, mainly from the expiring contract of LeBron James, valued at 52.6 million.

A team with Doncic, Antetokounmpo, and Reaves would be a formidable contender in the West. The Lakers currently hold a record of 33-21 despite Reaves' prolonged absence due to a calf injury. Whatever the outcome, the upcoming summer appears to be a crucial moment for the franchise as it shapes its future with Dončić as the main face of the project.
