NBA Rumors: Domantas Sabonis could end up with the Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors were close to making one of the big moves in the market during the last trade deadline, although they ultimately chose not to take the leap. Among the operations they seriously considered was the addition of All-Star center Domantas Sabonis, currently with the Sacramento Kings.

The Canadian franchise sought to strengthen its interior game with a dominant figure, while Sacramento explored options to rejuvenate its squad and lighten veteran contracts. Analyst Andy Bailey from Bleacher Report believes that this idea should not be ruled out and proposes a potential trade for this summer.

In his proposal, Toronto would receive Sabonis and Devin Carter, while Sacramento would acquire RJ Barrett, Jakob Poeltl, and a 2031 first-round draft pick protected in the top 3. For the Raptors, this move would fit into a strategy clearly focused on the present, building around Scottie Barnes after the significant move made last season with the arrival of Brandon Ingram.

Sabonis would bring rebounding and playmaking ability from the post, being one of the big men with the best court vision in the league. Additionally, coach Darko Rajaković could capitalize on that creative talent in offense. The trade would also help balance the roster, as Barrett shares a profile and position with Barnes and Ingram. Moreover, Barrett is entering the final year of his contract. On the other hand, Carter would bolster the perimeter with a defensive profile and collective work ethic.

Sacramento's Interest

From Sacramento's perspective, the key to the deal would lie in obtaining the first-round pick. However, Barrett would also hold value within the project. Sacramento's current executive, Scott Perry, previously selected the forward in the 2019 Draft when he was general manager of the New York Knicks, picking him number three overall. Although the trade didn't materialize back then, the proposal still makes sense for both parties and could regain momentum in the next summer trade window.
