The Boston Celtics secure Jordan Walsh with a three-year, $16 million contract extension

The Boston Celtics continue to secure the future of their young core. The Massachusetts franchise has reached an agreement with Jordan Walsh for a three-year, $16 million contract extension, as reported by Chris Haynes of NBA TV.

As part of the deal, the Celtics will first exercise the $2.4 million team option for the 2026-27 season. From there, the new extension will take effect, keeping the small forward tied to the franchise until the 2029-30 season, although the final year will be subject to a new team option, according to information from Shams Charania and Mike Scotto.

With the option already exercised and the extension signed, Walsh will be guaranteed approximately $12.7 million over the next three years, a significant investment by Boston for a player only 22 years old, selected in the second round of the 2023 NBA Draft from the University of Arkansas.

A bet on the future

For the Celtics, the move means securing a rotation player with a very favorable contract economically. If Walsh continues his progression, the deal could become one of the best value operations on the roster, as he will occupy a very small percentage of the salary cap during his development years.

Furthermore, Boston continues to build a group of young small forwards with affordable contracts, including Ron Harper Jr., recently renewed, and first-round picks Baylor Scheierman and Hugo González, all under team control for at least the next two seasons.

Took a step forward last season

The opportunity for Walsh arrived at a key moment. With Jayson Tatum recovering from Achilles tendon rupture and following the departures of Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford, Joe Mazzulla needed to find solutions for the forward and center positions.

Walsh responded with the best season of his career, playing 68 games, 25 of which he started, and averaging 5.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 17.8 minutes per game, establishing himself as a useful piece in the rotation.

A defensive specialist

Although he still has room to grow on offense, Walsh's main value lies in his defensive performance. With his 7.2-foot wingspan, great athletic ability, and constant intensity, he can defend multiple positions and take on highly demanding matchups.

During the regular season, Mazzulla assigned him to defend stars like Jalen Brunson, Cade Cunningham, James Harden, Paolo Banchero, and LaMelo Ball. In Boston's first-round playoff exit against the Philadelphia 76ers, Walsh spent much of his time trying to contain explosive guard Tyrese Maxey.

With this extension, the Celtics confirm their confidence in the young small forward's potential, who will have several more years to continue growing within a franchise that aims to combine young talent with sustainable contracts for the future.
