NBA Rumors: The 3 franchises vying to acquire Jonathan Kuminga

Jonathan Kuminga continues to be one of the names yet to resolve his future in NBA free agency. The forward has not signed with any team despite the interest generated by several franchises, including Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers, while the Minnesota Timberwolves have recently joined the bidding.

Lakers, Cavaliers, and Timberwolves, the main contenders

Both the Lakers and the Cavaliers have shown interest in acquiring Kuminga's services, although both franchises approach the operation from different economic scenarios. In Cleveland's case, the only way to bring him in would be through a sign-and-trade.

As reported by HoopsHype, the Timberwolves have also recently entered the race for the player. However, the Minneapolis franchise is also financially constrained. Minnesota only has the taxpayer mid-level exception, valued at $6.06 million, while the Lakers have a higher economic proposal on the table and a longer contract.

After missing out on LeBron James, the Timberwolves are keeping the power forward position open for a player like Kuminga. Even so, although they could offer a better fit in terms of sports, both the Lakers and the Cavaliers are ahead in the race for his signing.

Kuminga's demands complicate negotiations

Kuminga arrived at the Atlanta Hawks in the trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Golden State Warriors, an operation that also included Buddy Hield.

At the end of the last season, he signed a two-year, $46 million contract with the Warriors after several weeks of negotiations. Now, history seems to be repeating itself as the player still hasn't accepted any offer, considering that the received proposals do not reflect his true market value.

Initially, Kuminga was looking for a salary close to $20 million per season. Additionally, he is not willing to sign a three-year contract, a mandatory condition according to NBA regulations to complete a sign-and-trade, posing an additional obstacle especially for the Cavaliers.

The Lakers remain the favorites

Meanwhile, the Lakers reportedly had a two-year, $20 million offer from the player rejected. Nevertheless, this proposal still places the Los Angeles franchise as the most likely destination among the three interested teams.

Minnesota cannot economically match that offer, and Kuminga's camp remains calm, convinced that there could still be movement in the free-agent market.

Therefore, unless a new franchise with greater financial leeway and a more attractive proposal emerges, the Lakers continue to be, at the moment, the destination with the best chances of acquiring the former Warriors player.
