Wembanyama-SGA and LeBron against the champions: a luxury Opening Night in the NBA

The NBA has not wanted to wait to go all out. On October 20, the start date of the 2026-27 season, will feature two authentic blockbusters: Philadelphia 76ers-New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder-San Antonio Spurs. Both matchups can be followed via NBC and Peacock.

On one hand, the showdown between San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder will mark a new battle between Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, two of the great figures of the new generation in the NBA. It will also be a rematch of the last Western Conference Finals, in a match that promises to become one of the league's great rivalries in the years to come.

Wembanyama will once again face Gilgeous-Alexander on a national stage, with both teams poised to compete for it all again. The French center and the Thunder's star represent two different paths to NBA dominance, but both arrive as absolute protagonists in a Western Conference that is set to be fiercely competitive.

The other major matchup will take place at the New York Knicks, the current NBA champions. The Madison Square Garden will host the Philadelphia 76ers, who have emerged as one of the top teams after a summer marked by the arrivals of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown.

LeBron James, once again in the spotlight

Therefore, it will be an especially attractive debut for LeBron with Philadelphia, and a high-level test for the Sixers' new project. They will face a Knicks team beginning their title defense and having the opportunity to do so against one of the most anticipated teams in the NBA.

Two games, four franchises with championship aspirations, and stars like Wembanyama, Gilgeous-Alexander, LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, and Jalen Brunson. The NBA is already gearing up for an Opening Night that promises to kick off the 2026-27 season with a bang.
