The reason why LeBron "debuted" as a center in his first game with the Sixers

LeBron James found a new way to make a difference in his debut with the Philadelphia 76ers. In the 106-100 victory against the New York Knicks, the veteran forward took on center duties to help contain Karl-Anthony Towns, a tactical decision that allowed his team to maintain the flow of the game when Joel Embiid had to sit due to foul trouble.

The need to reorganize the defense turned out to be one of the keys to Philadelphia's victorious debut. With Embiid hampered by his three fouls at the end of the second quarter and a weakened interior rotation, Nick Nurse turned to an alternative that the coaching staff had already contemplated before the game: using a more perimeter-oriented player to defend Towns.

Embiid proposes the change and LeBron takes on Towns' defense

The decision came at a delicate moment for the 76ers. Philadelphia was trailing 51-46 when, with 2:13 left in the half, Embiid committed his third foul and retreated to the bench. The center explained that it was he who suggested to his teammates and the coaching staff that James take his position to close out the first half.

“I suggested it to my teammates and the coaching staff because, given how the fouls were being called — and to be honest — I felt I couldn't be as aggressive on defense as I should, having already three fouls and wanting to stay on the court,” Embiid explained. “I just told them that I thought we should do that.”

The center's concern was to avoid fouls limiting his defensive aggression and compromising his continuation in the game. Instead of risking accumulating another infraction, the Sixers opted for a different configuration, with James tasked with defending Towns for the rest of the second quarter.

The adjustment worked. Philadelphia managed to stay close on the scoreboard and went into halftime with a deficit of only four points, 58-54. LeBron took on the responsibility of slowing down one of New York's most dangerous big men, while his teammates maintained the defensive structure around that new matchup.

Nick Nurse had already prepared this defensive alternative

The move wasn't an absolute improvisation. Sixers coach Nick Nurse explained that the coaching staff had studied the possibility of using a more perimeter-oriented player to defend Towns, especially due to the characteristics of the screens and rolls he runs with Jalen Brunson.

Philadelphia also faced the game with limitations in its interior rotation. Dean Wade was sidelined due to a left ankle injury, while backup center Ariel Hukporti had already been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his right Achilles tendon.

“[We talked about putting] a more perimeter-oriented player — a 'four' — on KAT because with so many screens and rolls (pick-and-rolls) between him and [Jalen] Brunson, that gives you versatility to employ other types of defensive coverages,” Nurse commented. “I think it worked well... In the long run, I think it was very positive for us.”

The strategy offered the Sixers an option to respond to the actions between Towns and Brunson without relying exclusively on their centers. James's mobility and ability to defend away from the basket allowed Philadelphia to adjust its coverages and make it difficult for New York to find comfortable situations on offense.

A decisive defense by LeBron causes a key turnover

James's influence wasn’t limited to his work during the second quarter. One of his most important defensive plays came in the closing minutes, when the Sixers were defending a 102-98 lead with just under two minutes left.

LeBron pressured Towns beyond the three-point line and blocked the passing lane that OG Anunoby needed to get him the ball. Faced with that difficulty, Anunoby attempted a cross-court pass to Mikal Bridges, stationed on the wing, but Tyrese Maxey read the trajectory, intercepted the pass, and finished the transition with an uncontested dunk.

The play extended Philadelphia's lead to six points with 1:52 remaining and was a significant blow to the Knicks' chances. Although the action ended with Maxey as the star of the steal and finish, James's previous pressure on Towns was crucial in forcing a more risky passing alternative.

“Obviously, KAT is very dangerous when he has space,” James commented. “I wanted to be there when he received the ball, not giving him a moment of breathing room... And Tyrese, who was alert like a defender in open field, was able to anticipate and get that dunk. It was a key play that changed the dynamic of the game.”

James attributed the success of the play to the work of the whole team and to constant communication among the defenders. As he explained, collective coordination allowed them to close spaces and prevent Towns from finding blind spots from which he could receive the ball with an advantage.

“It’s simply about maintaining a high level of communication,” he stated.

Embiid recalls the strategy used with the United States in Paris 2024

The defensive solution also reminded Embiid of a strategy he shared with James during the 2024 Paris Olympics. In that competition, both were part of the U.S. national team and LeBron was responsible for defending Serbian center Nikola Jokic in the semifinals.

Embiid pointed out that experience provided a precedent for understanding how James could take on defensive responsibilities against a top-level big man, even when his usual position is not center.

“It changes everything,” Embiid concluded.

In his debut with the Sixers, James finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, figures that reflect his contribution in various facets of the game. However, his impact against the Knicks went beyond statistics: he took on a demanding matchup, helped sustain the defense when Embiid was affected by fouls, and participated indirectly in one of the plays that ultimately tilted the game.

The victory by 106-100 allowed Philadelphia to start the season with a win on one of the toughest courts in the NBA. For the Sixers, the game also left a tactical alternative that Nurse considers useful in the long term: to use James as an interior defender at certain moments to adapt the defense to the characteristics of their opponents.
