Verge Jr. shines in Leyma's comeback against Tenerife

The Leyma Coruña completed a commendable comeback against La Laguna Tenerife, demonstrating their ability to react after spending many minutes trailing on the scoreboard. The victory marks the second win of the season for the Galician team, which found in Alonzo Verge Jr. the perfect catalyst to transform a game that seemed to slip away. The Illinois point guard was the architect of the Coruña reaction, dynamiting the match in both phases of play and closing the rival's options with an all-around performance that earned him the most notable individual recognition of the day.

A memorable debut in the Liga Endesa

For Alonzo Verge Jr., this game marks an important milestone in his professional career. He arrived in the Liga Endesa in the final weeks of the 2024-25 season as a reinforcement for Leyma Coruña, a team to which he returns after his previous stint. His late arrival has not prevented him from quickly adapting to the competitive rhythm of the top Spanish league, and his first award as Player of the Week confirms the immediate impact he is making in the Coruña project under the direction of Carles Marco.

The designation is not coincidental. The numbers he accumulated against La Laguna Tenerife reflect a high-level performance in all aspects of the game. With 34 valuation credits, Verge Jr. set his best record so far in the Liga Endesa, surpassing both his and the team's expectations at a critical moment of the season.

Precision offense and leadership in direction

As the top scorer of the match, Alonzo Verge Jr. contributed 26 points with notable efficiency. His shooting stats reflect a player in superb form: 8 of 13 on two-point shots (62%), 1 of 2 on three-pointers (50%), and 7 of 8 on free throws (88%). These percentages not only indicate precision but also bravery in decisive moments when Leyma needed to convert their opportunities to come back on the scoreboard.

However, the most significant aspect of his performance goes beyond scoring. Alonzo Verge Jr. exhibited absolute leadership in directing the game from his point guard position, distributing 12 assists that allowed his teammates to find space and clean shooting options. This assist total becomes his personal best in the Liga Endesa, demonstrating that his ability to read the game and distribute the ball is one of his main strengths in Leyma's project.

Defensive contribution and control of pace

Defense was another pillar of Verge Jr.’s performance against La Laguna Tenerife. He secured 4 rebounds that provided additional offensive options for the Galician team, underscoring his commitment at both ends of the court. His defensive involvement was also reflected in a +/- of +10, one of the most revealing indicators of his net impact on the final result. With only 8 fouls received throughout the match, he completed a clean and disciplined performance, without giving in to unnecessary pressures.

Controlling the pace was another distinguishing feature. Alonzo Verge Jr. not only accelerated the game at critical times but also knew how to slow it down when Leyma needed to consolidate their comeback. This balance between speed and control is characteristic of seasoned point guards, and in his case, he accomplishes it despite having been in the Spanish competition for only a few weeks.

A comeback of character

The victory of Leyma Coruña was not easy. The Galician team spent long minutes behind on the scoreboard, but they showed pride and responsiveness. The presence of Verge Jr. in critical moments was decisive in transforming a difficult position into a win that adds three vital points. His international experience and technical quality were the missing ingredients for the team to successfully complete the comeback against a rival like La Laguna Tenerife.

With this performance, Alonzo Verge Jr. not only earns individual recognition as Player of the Week but also establishes himself as a benchmark for the coming weeks. Leyma Coruña now has a high-level point guard who can be decisive in upcoming games, especially in those moments when offensive quality and game direction are crucial.

Future prospects in the Liga Endesa

The trajectory of Alonzo Verge Jr. in the Liga Endesa has just begun, but his impact is already evident. With 26 points, 12 assists, 4 rebounds, and 34 valuation points in his standout performance, he has proven that Leyma Coruña made a wise acquisition. His ability to lead from the point, his shooting precision, and his defensive commitment make him a valuable asset for the Galician project.

Being recognized as Player of the Week is just the beginning of what promises to be a significant contribution throughout the season. His rapid adaptation to the Spanish competition, combined with his international experience, suggests that Leyma Coruña can count on a reliable point guard in decisive moments. The comeback against La Laguna Tenerife is a perfect example of how his presence transforms team dynamics, providing the security and quality necessary to compete in an increasingly demanding Liga Endesa.
