Stephen Curry, about retirement: "I still enjoy it a lot, I don't think it will come soon"

The future of Stephen Curry in the NBA doesn't seem to have a close end date. The Golden State Warriors star made it clear that he doesn't contemplate retiring in the short term and that it will be his own body that will determine when to say goodbye to basketball.

The guard openly discussed his career during a conversation on The Athletic Show with journalist Marcus Thompson II and his father, Dell Curry. In the interview, the player explained that he still greatly enjoys the game and that his competitive drive remains strong.

Stephen Curry pointed out that the key to determining how long he will continue to play will be his physical condition.

“I think the body is the first indicator,” he explained. “When I'm on the court, I still enjoy it a lot. It's still my happy place. The competition, the camaraderie, and pursuing something important still motivate me. I don't see that changing soon”.

Curry celebrated his 38th birthday on Saturday and is currently in his seventeenth season in the NBA.

A season conditioned by injuries

Although his offensive production remains high—27.2 points per game—his participation this season has been limited.

The guard has only played 39 games and has not played since January 30, when he exited the game against the Detroit Pistons due to a knee injury. His return before the end of the season remains uncertain.

However, Curry explained that the demanding daily routine required to stay at this level is already a natural part of his career.

His father's advice

During the conversation, Dell Curry also chimed in, who had a 16-season career in the NBA and whose jersey will soon be retired by the Charlotte Hornets.

The former player shared a simple philosophy on athletic longevity: “Sixteen years flew by. My rule is to play as long as you can… and then play one more year”.

Discipline and constant movement

Steph also attributes his endurance to rigorous training habits he has maintained since his early years in the league.

Among the anecdotes he mentioned, he shared that one of the compliments he most enjoys hearing during games comes from opponents themselves, asking him to stop moving so much even in dead ball situations.

For now, Curry's immediate future remains tied to Golden State: his contract with the Warriors extends until the 2026-27 season.
