NBA Rumors: Have the San Antonio Spurs lost interest in Giannis Antetokounmpo?

The idea of seeing Victor Wembanyama and Giannis Antetokounmpo together on the San Antonio Spurs seems as spectacular as it is hard to imagine. On paper, a pairing like that in the paint would be the most dominant in the NBA on both ends of the court, something not seen since the days of Tim Duncan and David Robinson.

However, building such a duo would come at a very high cost. A hypothetical trade for Antetokounmpo could force the Spurs to part ways with key players like De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, or Harrison Barnes, thus changing the team's balance entirely.

Over the past year, San Antonio has been linked several times with the star from the Milwaukee Bucks, both in the summer and before the trade deadline. The uncertainty surrounding Antetokounmpo's future and the possibility of Milwaukee missing the playoffs have sparked renewed rumors.

The team's progress has been faster than expected, reducing the need for a risky move. Last summer, when there were still doubts about how far players like Castle or Dylan Harper could go, the idea of signing Antetokounmpo seemed more logical. Back then, bringing in the Greek would have immediately opened a window to contend for the title.

Now, with the young core's development, the situation has changed, and the team feels competitive without the need for a major trade. That doesn't mean San Antonio won't be active in the market. The team has enough assets and contracts that could fit in future deals, although the approach would be different.

Instead of pursuing another superstar, the focus could be on adding established players that complement the roster without dismantling it. Among the names that fit that profile are Herb Jones, Trey Murphy III, and OG Anunoby. Such additions would enhance the team without disrupting the current core.

Antetokounmpo remains one of the best players in the world, and any trade for him would come at a very steep price. It is expected that numerous teams would show interest if he becomes available again. Nonetheless, some franchises at the top of the league, like the Spurs themselves, the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Boston Celtics, or the Detroit Pistons, might choose to retain their current rosters and see how far they can go without such a drastic move.
