NBA Rumors: The trade that would bring Kyrie Irving to the Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota Timberwolves is clear about the need to add another big name to relieve the pressure on Anthony Edwards and show him that the project is ready to compete seriously in the tough Western Conference. There is a fear within the franchise that if the team doesn't make a definitive leap, "Ant" may start considering a future away from Minneapolis.

The main target for the Timberwolves this summer seems to be Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, as Christopher Kline points out on Fansided, Minnesota does not have the vast draft capital that the Milwaukee Bucks would likely demand in a deal for the Greek player.

Faced with this situation, Kline suggests an alternative with a big impact: Kyrie Irving. The journalist proposes a potential trade between Minnesota and Dallas Mavericks that would allow the Wolves to add the veteran point guard.

The deal would involve Irving moving to Minnesota, while Dallas would receive Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo—who will be out at least well into the next season—, along with a 2026 first-round draft pick, 28th overall, and another first-round pick in 2028.

The Issue on the Timberwolves' Perimeter

Kline believes that DiVincenzo's Achilles injury has exposed a clear need on the team's perimeter, a void that Irving could perfectly fill. He also points out that Mike Conley no longer seems capable of maintaining a significant role in the rotation, while Terrence Shannon Jr. has had minimal impact in his first two NBA seasons.

The idea of combining Irving and Edwards on the perimeter is particularly appealing from an offensive standpoint. According to Kline, both are elite off-ball scorers, capable of creating advantages, attacking the rim, and facilitating play. The contrast between Edwards' physical and explosive power and Irving's technical creativity would make the pair very challenging to defend against.

The big question mark lies in Kyrie Irving's physical condition. The point guard will turn 34 and is coming off a season-long absence due to reconstructive surgery on his left anterior cruciate ligament. His performance post such a serious injury remains uncertain.

From the perspective of the Dallas Mavericks, the deal is not without its doubts as well. Kline questions if the franchise would really want to take on Julius Randle's contract, which still has two seasons left at an average of $34 million annually. Therefore, the analyst suggests that perhaps involving a third team to absorb that contract might be necessary.

For Minnesota, Irving's arrival would represent a significant change and a clear commitment to immediately compete in the West alongside Anthony Edwards. On the other hand, Dallas could further its rebuild around Cooper Flagg, adding two valuable draft picks plus any assets that could be acquired later in exchange for Randle.
