The future of LeBron James once again becomes one of the big mysteries of the NBA summer. As journalist Brian Windhorst explained on the program Get Up, if the Los Angeles Lakers want to have the star for another season, they will have to take the first step and work seriously to convince him.

Windhorst made it clear that James does not intend to go to the Los Angeles franchise to ask for a renewal or demand a new contract. The insider pointed out, "LeBron is not going to the Lakers saying 'give me more.' They will have to go to him,"

He also explained that the player has total leeway to manage the timing of his decision and could even wait until August to assess his future and study his options. According to Windhorst, "he can do what he wants." In fact, he claimed that if he decided to wait until just before the start of the season, there would still be interested teams willing to sign him.

Lakers Forced to Make a Move

The journalist also warned that the Lakers cannot afford to wait indefinitely while LeBron's expired $58 million contract remains unresolved. Windhorst explained, "They need to go to LeBron and say, 'This is what we want to offer you and why.'"

Furthermore, he added that the issue is not only about money. It will also be important for the franchise to convey respect and clearly explain the sports plan. Windhorst pointed out that if the Lakers want to ask for an economic effort or a salary reduction, they will have to justify what they will do with that financial margin and which players they will try to bring in to strengthen the team.

LeBron's situation is not the only major issue pending in Los Angeles. The franchise also must resolve the future of Austin Reaves, who will decline his $15 million player option to sign a much higher new contract. The guard has the right to aspire to a maximum five-year extension and over $240 million with the Lakers.
