NBA Rumors: Kawhi Leonard Could Leave the Los Angeles Clippers

Although Kawhi Leonard remained with the Los Angeles Clippers after the close of the market, several rival teams explored the possibility of acquiring the two-time Finals MVP.

On The Hoop Collective podcast, journalist Brian Windhorst explained that different franchises investigated the option of a trade after the Clippers moved James Harden and Ivica Zubac. He mentioned that after Harden's departure, he inquired about Zubac and did not receive a clear "no", which fueled the belief that he could be traded, something that eventually happened. From there, the question about Leonard arose, and it was confirmed that teams called to show interest in him, although it is not clear if the conversations became serious.

When it became evident that the Clippers were dismantling their core, Leonard's departure seemed a possibility. However, his situation is more complex than that of Harden or Zubac. Harden is facing the final guaranteed year of his contract, while Zubac, at 28 years old, has two more seasons on a three-year, $58.7 million deal signed in August 2024.

Leonard, on the other hand, is earning $50 million this season, a figure that is hard to fit for many interested teams. It is also difficult to estimate what the Los Angeles franchise would demand in return. His injury history is known, but he is having one of the best seasons of his career.

An Outstanding Season

The six-time All-Star is averaging 27.9 points— a career high— shooting 49.1% from the field and 38.3% from three-point range, along with 6.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.1 steals in 41 games as a starter. Leonard could become a more attractive target in the summer when he enters the final year of his contract. An expiring deal of $50.3 million would be acceptable for many teams, especially if he maintains his All-NBA level until the end of the season.

If the Clippers opt for a complete rebuild, his trade would be the definitive step after the departures of Harden and Zubac. However, his performance could also convince the franchise to build the project around him, supported by valuable draft assets from the Indiana Pacers to surround him with top-tier talent.
